Read This One :)

So I have news for this email. I have to have an exciting one every once in a while. I had a great week and we had some great experiences. We had zone conference with a general authority on Wednesday and we got transfer calls on Thursday night.
I'm emailing from Aalborg this week because that's my new area. I left Elder Lee and Holbæk at 7 this morning and had a 5 hour train ride to Aalborg and my new companion Elder Olson. Aalborg is the 4th biggest city in Denmark so it will be a little different from little Holbæk.
This week has been great and I have had a lot of fun. On Monday we carved pumpkins at the church in Roskilde and it was fun, but I'm not very good at carving pumpkins. After we were done we left the building to find our car with a flat tire. I put the spare on like a pro and we took it in the next morning. It had a screw in it longer than my finger! I don't know how that happened but it was pretty annoying.
On Wednesday we had an amazing zone conference with Elder Paul V. Johnson. We talked and learned about teaching and how to improve our teaching. It was so helpful and I had a lot of questions answered.
On Thursday we had splits in Nykøbing and it was fun. I don't have any great stories from it but it was good to spend time with and learn from the Elders down there before I was transferred.
The weekend was great and we put in some really good work. We had a great lesson with one of our investigators and we even got a member to come with.
Well that was my week and I luckily finished packing in time to get on the train this morning. I don't have anything super special to share but on Sunday I got the chance to share my testimony in church before I left. While I was talking I just looked out over all the members and was overwhelmed with gratitude because of everything they have done for me. They were patient with my Danish and loved me right into the ward. It's great to see the members examples of true Christlike love. Charity is definitely an attribute we can all work on for eternity.
I love you all and I hope you aren't too cold yet. Thank you for everything.
I sadly don't have a way to send pictures right now so I'm really sorry about that. Next week :) (note from mom: he sent photos for this week the next week, so I attached them here)

To Mom:

They don't celebrate Halloween as much as in the US but I've heard that it's getting bigger. That does sound like a sad Halloween. As long as you have candy that's all halloween is good for. Just remember that if we were still little kids you wouldn't even want to think about Halloween.

I got transferred to Aalborg. It's going to be an adventure. I got one of the parts of it. I got the two DVDs. I got the package slip for the second part but I couldn't pick it up until today at 1 so yeah. I just asked Elder Lee to pick it up and give it to the office and eventually I would have it. Should I just tell them to keep it there? I didn't exactly need every one of the books in English and Danish haha. But I can do that either way. I can't believe I'm almost 19. That's crazy. I'm old. Guess what. On the 18th of November I will have been on a mission for 6 months. Time is just flying away like crazy.

I wish I could hear Brandons farewell. I'm sure he did good. I'm excited to hear about his mission.
The Naturskole was pretty neat. I might get some cool city pictures here in Aalborg. I would love to come back and give you a tour. Start planning for that.

My toe is doing better. It wasn't ingrown just some sort of infection that hurt like crazy. It's a bit better so I hope it fully clears up. I wish dad wouldn't have given me that problem. Toes suck.

My hands didn't hurt but I can't count how many times the potatoes slipped out of my hands. Don't worry you're pretty tough for how small you are. I wouldn't try and fight you.

I didn't get the scripture case back yet. They forgot to bring it to conference, but they are in my zone now so I will see them at some point soon.
I usually bring it with me. I think that would work. I got a lot of music from Elder Lee but if you have any good stuff I would like it. I like music.

The other fourth floor last door story was on a BYU talk I think but yeah it was good to hear it twice. And they both applied in a different way.

That is pretty sad about Lilly but I think that would be good. I really hope she behaves for them because they sound nice. She will probably be extra happy.

I love you too!!! Fortsæt at spise sundt mad. :) smil oft. Elsk alle. Jeg elsker dig.

Dad,
I'm super excited for the next while in the new area. So far it's just a big city. My companion seems great so far and I think he is from Salt lake. It's a biking area and he said they biked 1000 miles last transfer. My week has been good and the language has really been coming along. We will see how different the dialect is here.
Work is no fun. I hope things pick up and work out. I don't even know what I want to do with my life one day. Good thing I know what I have to do now! It's starting to get dark early here too. Especially because of the time change. That sounds like a good service project with the Clabaughs. You've also been doing good at running. I've been working out but I don't lose any weight.
I hope you get to go pheasant hunting if Cooper can't go to the meet. I miss doing that.
Christina was the investigator we were working with most and we had a great lesson with her on Saturday so I hope all goes well with her. We aren't working super closely with any less actives but we had one with to our lesson on Saturday and he will be there next week too. So that's great.
Thanks for everything. I'm sorry my emails kind of suck. I can't wait to skype you in a couple months. I love you.

Dirty Gutters and Pizza

We had a great week here in Holbæk. Some highlights of the week: On Monday we had nothing to do so we decided to check out the Holbæk Naturskole. It's basically a little section of forest and they have a lot of deer and elk and stuff so it was pretty cool.
I'm Legal! On like Wednesday my Visa finally came in the mail so I'm not an illegal immigrant anymore. Hurray!
I had to go to the doctor this week because I have an infection in my toe, she prescribed some antibiotic though so it's all good.
We helped a family in the ward make soup to feed the whole ward in church on Sunday and I think I peeled 2,000,000 potatoes. It was pretty fun but the potatoes kept slipping out of my hand.
Explanation for the title. On Friday we did service for a lady named Donna. We had to climb these way sketchy ladders up to the gutters on the roof and just clean out the gunk with our hands. It was dirty and freezing cold and rainy, but I guess it was pretty fun too. When we got home we made a big pizza loaded with delicious things to make up for it.
We have had an investigator that has been hard to get in contact with so we went to visit her on Monday and met with her on Saturday. We had the best lesson ever with her and read straight from the Book of Mormon and taught from it. She applied it to herself and it just went great. The chapter we read was Alma 32 about how faith is like a seed. We need to plant it but guess what. That seed's not gonna grow itself. I realized that for me, my seed of faith didn't grow in one day because of some big experience. My seed has slowly grown because of the little things I do each day (Prayer, scripture study) and the little feelings I get when I do them. Some people have big experiences but for the most part our faith will grow because of our own dedication and efforts. I would invite you all to strive after dilligence with the small things that will really make a difference in your testimony.
I love you all and hope you are having a good fall. I love hearing from you as well so keep me updated. I find out if I transfer on Friday so keep an eye out for my email next week because it might have news. Have an awesome week!

Hi my favorite mom!

Sister Stokholm is great, she showed me your Facebook post and was very happy that you were happy again haha.

I'm glad you got my letter. I was wondering if it would get there after the dumb USB thing.

I will probably get my scripture case on Wednesday. :) It has definitely gotten cold enough for gloves. Especially when we are biking. I even use my coat sometimes because the Jacket I brought isn't amazing. I don't have much music on it, mostly just stuff from the MoTab website. You can send me songs, if that's even possible.

Haha I am excited for cinnamon rolls and pie. I will make you something Danish.
Tonya is probably going crazy trying to think of someone to replace you. She might have to find two people.

Haha if I speak Danish to you at Christmas time you won't be able to tell if it's good or bad so that's good. I wonder where I will be for Christmas time.

Haha if you ordered anything from lds.org it will probably be there tomorrow. Did you send it to my address or the mission office? Transfers are next Monday so I might not be here, then again, I might. Haha I'm excited to find out on Friday.

Haha that hike sounds really fun. I saw dad's pictures of it and it looked great. I wish I could go to Betty's sometimes. The resteraunts here are lame and expensive, but I guess that is keeping us from eating out too much. Speaking of which I have been doing a whole lot better at that. Haven't had to use any personal funds for a long time!

Eating healthier sucks. And it's super hard with so many eating appointments. We ate with a family in the ward this week and they are known for feeding missionaries more than they can eat. It's not that they force you, they just keep bringing thing after thing out and expecting you to eat it all. They are really great though. A couple of my favorite people ever.

I did listen to the talk! And funny thing we listened to a talk in the car right before that and he used the exact same story. It was pretty funny. But it was a really great talk and it really made me want to keep going. We have had some hard knocking sessions and it was good to have that talk in mind.

Haha Elder Lee and I have gotten along great. I am really greatful for the companions that I've had. I'll be sad to leave him.

I love you sooooo much :) Have a super duper awesome fantastic week.
Love, Elder Smith

Hey Dad
The motherland? Not much too new. I get transfer calls on Friday so I find out if I stay in Holbæk or not.
That sounds like a good service project. I also like the ones where a lot of people just come and get it done. It makes it easier for everyone.
That also sounds like a good fall break. I bet Aubrey liked the Filipino food better. The pho was pretty good. Not as good as that one place but I liked it a lot. There are probably vietnamese people here but I wouldn't be able to tell them apart from most other asians haha. But there are quite a mix of foreigners here. I like the pictures from your hike.
I'm sure your talk was great. I wish I could hear your talks. I love reading them. I have been reading so many talks. I can't believe how many general conferences I took for granted. Home teaching is awesome. And so important. I've been slightly dissappointed as well that we have really been trying to find a member to come to our lessons with one of our investigators. She is a girl so if we don't have someone with we have to sit outside and it's starting to get cold. Anyways we asked so many people and none of them could come.
Things are going well. The language is going so much better. My companion says it has been improving really quickly. He is really good. We try to speak it as much as possible. It is hard but it helps a lot. I haven't done tons of family history. We don't have a ton of time. But we helped with a youth activity a couple weeks ago that was family history. I haven't seen anything super cool. It's pretty exciting when we see a truck. Haha. The work is definitely hard, but I definitely rejoice over the good moments. I notice a big difference when we come home from a good day as opposed to a hard one. Thanks for the advice on the fallen through appointments. It is hard when those things happen and sometimes really annoying but we try to look at it positively and make the most out of it.
I sent Cooper a good email this week. I hope it was good. It does sound like he is having a rough time. It's hard because I wish he could be a little different with some things and that others would have patience with him. I'll keep thinking about him.
Thank you for being awesome. I love you lots. Have a good week.

From Sister Stokholm

We LOVE Sister Stokholm. She has been so wonderful to Tyler, and a great connection for us here so far away. When I accidentally deleted Tyler's email to me, she called him and told him to resend it. I am so grateful for her! I hope I get to meet her someday and give her a big hug. :)

She sent this photo of Elder Smith and Elder Lee to us (while they were there eating dinner... she's amazing!).

Hard Work

Well it has been a good week. Lot's of hard work.
Early in the week we had a great lesson with one of our new investigators. He is new to religeon but he really wants to learn.
Basically that lesson was the best part of our week. We had 5 different appointments cancelled and 2 eating appointments cancelled. We had a number of rough knocking sessions where no one would give us the time of day. It was definitely hard. But it's okay. I'll talk about that in a minute.
Among one of those hard sessions we knocked for about 2 hours after one of our appointments were cancelled. On the second to last door, after no success, we met Rasmus. He was super open to talk to us and really listened. He said he is looking forward to seeing us next week.
Another plus for this week is that my Danish is really coming along. I can't understand everything, but I am able to hold a conversation well and get my point across. It is a huge blessing!
So this morning I was thinking over the week and wondering why it was so hard and unsuccessful. We have been working so hard for so long, why is nothing coming from it, then I read a talk by Elder Holland this morning called "Lessons from Liberty Jail" In the talk he says "Indeed, you can have sacred, revelatory, profoundly instructive experiences with the Lord in the mostmiserable experiences of your life—in the worst settings, while enduring the most painful injustices, when facing the most insurmountable odds and opposition you have ever faced." It changed my outlook on this week, filled with opposition. It has now become opportunity. I have definitely learned this week and I'm almost positive that this also means I need to turn a little more towards the Lord. In the hard times we are not alone and we have work to do, and the blessings that follow are unlimited.
I love you all and I hope you have a great week. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures, but I'm sure I will next week. Hope you are all ready for winter!
Elder Smith

Hi Far
I'm doing great, I am happy, I am working harder than ever before. I finally finished conference this week as well. It was full of great talks. I'm sorry things are hard with Cooper. I'm also sorry I was hard. I should have listened better because it would have been easier for the both of us. But I continue to learn from you just looking back on everything. I hope things get better. I'm glad you've done good with your running. I don't usually run but I have been doing really good with morning workouts. You're 180 pounds!? I weigh almost 25 pounds more than you. But I have also been doing a lot better with eating so it's going down. Haha I can't believe they called about the shotgun. That was sooo long ago. I think it was more than 4 years. Too bad it doesn't shoot too good. I miss shooting and hunting. Especially when I see geese flying over or a pheasant in a field. You always have lot's of fun things to do but also loads of work to get in the way of it. Mice are not fun. We don't have mice, but Denmark has a spider problem. They are everywhere. That's weird that it is spring break in fall. I hope you have fun with her. The Holidays are coming fast and my 6 month mark is next month! It's crazy. I love you lots. Thanks for being such a great dad. I miss you I love you.
Love Elder Smith

Hi Mommy,
I guess one of our great members saw on Facebook that you lost my email. Eva Stokholm called me today and told me to come send it. Luckily I still have it but you don't have to wait till next week to get it.

Hi Mother!!!

I guess if girls think they are my girlfriends then that means I have options when I get home. I think my shoes will hold up. If I have to get some new ones I'm sure I could find them here. It would cost a lot for you to send shoes.

My scriptures weren't in the case so I'm not sure how it happened, but it's okay! I sent out an email to the whole mission asking if anyone had seen it, then the Zone leaders from Aarhus called me and they had it. I'm guessing after our zone conference all the stuff got taken there and the stuff that wasn't taken got left with those zone leaders. But I will have it back soon. It is weird about the USB. I don't know how it worked. I wonder if you're just not aloud to send files or something. I dunno. But I got a USB this week so all is well. I also got some gloves because it is getting cold!

The pastries here are definitely good but they are just different. There is nothing like a good cinamon roll here or a donut. They are good, just not the same.

You should definitely look up "The Garden" It was all in Danish. Danish is going so much better. I can't understand everything. But I'm getting to where I can understand enough to understand. If that makes any sense.

Dropbox seems to be working pretty great. It's much more convenient than before. Yeah it was pho. We were in a little restaraunt at the station and they had vietnamese stuff. I decided to try it. It wasn't amazing or anything but it was pretty good and brought back memories.

I have to start practicing some Christmas music. I hope that will be a fun experience.

I miss hearing you play. One of the primary kids got baptized a while ago and a lady played the violin and it made me think of you.

WOW! That's crazy. They probably remembered how great camp was with you. Maybe you just really needed to get to know the ladies in the ward while you were in RS. Who is replacing you?

Thank you for the pictures. I like them. But I really want that pie now. Like really really bad. I'm glad you miss me. I love you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. Thanks for making me awesome.

Hvasa

Hej ya'll! It's been a great week and all is well!
This week Elder Lee and I found new investigators and had some great eperiences.
One of them we knocked into on Tuesday. He has recently gotten out of prison and is concerned about forgiveness. He originally wanted to spend 24 hours with us and then we spend 24 hours with him so he can show us the real world. We told him we can't do that so he agreed to meet with us. We meet with him again today so hopefully all goes well.
A couple others we haven't met with again so we will so how things work out with them.
The last one is one we met last night out knocking. He has terrible cancer and can't do much, but he has a lot of faith. He lives with his mother and she listened as well. We taught him a bit and left him with a book of mormon and some uplifting scriptures. Then we made an appointment to meet with him next Sunday.
Other than our wonderful new investigators this week we had one rough day where we were biking out to an area to knock, and Elder Lee's chain kept falling off. We went to the bike shop and long story short it couldn't be fixed then so we just rode out to knock. When we finally got there, people weren't so happy to see us. No one would talk to us. No one would hold their door open except one lady who told us to go back to the USA. So it was rough. But hey, you win some you lose some. Every other day was great.
On Saturday we were able to go to Copenhagen and see a musical put on by our stake. It was called Havet or The Garden. It talked about how we all have our infirmities and trials and how the atonement covers them. A part of the musical that really touched me was when Jesus was praying to the Father, suffering for all of us. While that was happening the Devil was right next to him, telling him he couldn't do it that he wasn't able to perform the atonement and save us. Telling him to give up. I felt feelings of anger and humility as this musical exemplified what Christ actually did for us. It was not easy. Not even close. Salvation isn't casual. He suffered and died for us and didn't have a lot of support and just like us, the adversary wasn't happy with him. Remember what Christ has done for us, and remember that it won't be easy for us either. But. Also remember that he has suffered for you and is there for you always.
I love you all and I hope you have a super great week full of great experiences. Thank you for everything you do.
Love Elder Smith

To Dad:
My week was really good. We don't have very many solid things right now but a lot of new investigators. I wrote about them in my big email. The language is getting much better. I understand more everyday. The Danish every day has been super super hard but it has definitely helped me say things more clearly and correctly.
Leaves definitely aren't too fun. Last year was kind of fun with the trailer and the super huge leaf pile. I liked that part of it. I am definitely not ready for winter. It is getting cold really fast and I feel like I didn't get much of a fall. I love fall.
How has the new stake presidency been? Do you like them? That sounds like a good meeting you were in. I usually focus on one Christlike attribute each week. I study it one or two mornings throughout the week and I really try to apply it and become better with it. It has been going really good. That video sounds really good. What was it called?
I love you lots Dad. Thank you for your advice and love and support with everything. I am really thankful to have you helping me through everything.
Have a great week. I love you.
Love Elder Smith

Dearest mor,

I am doing good this week. Elder Lee and I have been successful and busy.
Here is the story of the stuff you sent me. I finally got your first letter and my debit card. I loved your first letter and the little quotes and things you sent with it. You asked some questions in it and I'll answer them because it will be a good update for you. You asked If I would get to go to the temple often. Sadly I haven't been since 30 day training but I hope to go on a Pday sometime before I get transfered somewhere far from the temple. Then you asked about girls I have been writing to. I usually email Kelsey and Jayda and Celia. I get emails from Lindsey Hunt sometimes. Then just random ones here and there. None of them think they are my girlfriend and none of them are haha. Those were your next two questions. You asked how I study every day. Usually I read from the Book of Mormon. Then I read a talk of some sort, then something from PMG or something else I want to study. Then you asked me about stuff I have and how they are. My Holy Tabbs are still great. I really like that system. My new scriptures are great and I love them. I have a sad story that goes along with them but I'll tell you at the end. My camera is awesome. It takes good pictures I just need to take more of them. My shoes are doing good. They are definitely getting used though :). My luggage is just about the same as when I left. So now to the sad stories. The first one is that I left my scripture case with my little hymnbook at Presidents house after 30 day training. Then they brought it to Zone conference a few weeks after and I forgot to get it. Sister O'Bryant said it was probably at the office at that point so I called the office and they hadn't seen it. So then the other day we were at the church where we had zone conference and I couldn't find it anywhere. So now it's missing and I'm not sure where to look for it next. The other sad story is I got your letter with they USB, but the USB wasn't there. The bottom of the letter was open and it was gone. So I'm not sure if you can't send USBs or what but I didn't get it. On the bright side, I got the letter part and I really needed it that day. So that is the story of the letters. I will just buy a USB. I probably should have done that in the first place. I sent you all a letter on Wednesday so let me know when it get's there.

Brandon emailed me about his call. That is so cool. I think he would be perfect in the Phillipines. I sent him an email back.

I sadly suck at reading so I didn't even get close to finishing 3 Nephi. Grrr. I am planning on reading the New Testament when I finish. So maybe I will be started next year on it...

I still have a full stick of American deoderant so I'm good for now.

I love fall weather. Sadly it seems like the weather here has changed from warm fall to cold fall in like two days. I wore my coat to the library today because it was rainy and cold.

I loved conference too. The talks were all amazing. So many things I can apply to missionary work. I loved it. I also really liked Rasband talking about Denmark. I actually saw that picture in a members home and wondered what it was and then saw that talk the next day so that was cool. Also with Renlunds talk. The Danish word for repentance is omvend. It means the same thing. I like that meaning of it too.
I don't have a favorite either. They were all good though. I haven't read that one from Uchtdorf but I will look it up and read it or listen to it.

Jeg elsker dig til solen og tilbage ti gang!

Love, Ældste Smith

I got the Pictures! I like them a lot! But I don't like you for sending me a picture of cinamon rolls.

Kun Dansk

It has been a great week and I hope you have all enjoyed conference. I was able to watch all except the Sunday afternoon session but that's coming.
This week has been really fun. On Monday we hung out in Roskilde but didn't do a ton. We had splits with Nykøbing on Wednesday and it was great to work with my district leader Elder Williams. After Splits on Wednesday we had zone training on Thursday in Roskilde. It was really, really good. The mission has decided to have a new standard. From now on we are supposed to speak only Danish from 9 in the morning to 9 in the evening. It's going to be super hard, but I am excited to see my Danish improve from it. As well as talking about Danish at zone training, President O'Bryant talked about the Book of Mormon. It was really good and we talked about true the Book of Mormon really is and why. We talked about gaining an intillectual testimony to go with your spiritual testimony.
Thursday evening we met with a new investigator named Rene. We met him on the street and he was a little drunk. When we met with him on Thursday he was a little drunk again, but he told us that God has told him he has to stop and that because we came he would stop. I'm really hoping next time we meet with him he will be sober so he is definitely in our prayers. If he is still drunk there isn't much we can progress from there.
Saturday was super awesome because we were able to begin conference. We watched the Saturday morning session with familien Nørrung and it was really fun. We all brought cookies and had a contest and Elder Lee and I won. We used Sister O'Bryant's chocolate chip cookie recipe so it was no contest.
On Sunday we had a General conference marathon and we watched conference at the church building with the Roskilde Sisters and the Nykøbing Elders. We had pancakes and cookies and tons of junk food so it was a great party. Sunday evening we watched the Sunday morning session with familien Møller.
To move to the spiritual side of conference, there were loads of amazing talks. I will probably be talking about them a lot over the next few weeks. Luckily. I have thought a little over one that I want to share a little about.
On Saturday morning there was a talk by J. Devn Cornish. It was amazing. He said that many times we find ourselves asking the question "Am I good enough, and am I going to make it?" The answer is Yes! You will be good enough, and Yes! you will make it. Right now we are not perfect and cannot become perfect right away, but one day we will be perfect. The thing is, we have to try. If we sit and wait we will never become perfect, but if we try our best to increase our faith and repent, we can become. Our Heavenly Father does not want us to fail and he intends for us to make it. With his help and with our sincere efforts, we can become more perfect every day.
I hope everything is going great for all of you. I love hearing from you and you are all great examples. Thank you for your support. Have a great week!

To Dad:

I have had a good week and it has been pretty productive. We have been busy. Sounds like things are moving forward with the store and that's good. I hope you will have more time to do your stuff soon. It's good that you made your bosses happy though. That's important. Denmark has been pretty rainy too. It's fine for the most part, but not fun to walk, bike, or drive in. The worst is driving when it's dark and rainy. It doesn't seem like fall is coming here. Just like summer is getting cold, but it looks the same mostly. Hopefully the leaves will change soon. I love fall. I loved conference too. I only have one more session to watch and I am excited for it. I will definitely be reading or listening to the talks again. Thank you for everything. Thank you for your advice. I always try my best to follow it. I love you so much. Have a good week.
Love Elder Smith

Hi Mother!
I saw the missionary choir too. They were great and it would have been super awesome. I love the choir experience I had at the MTC though so it's okay. I'm glad those missionaries got to do that. I am definitely glad I'm not in the MTC anymore though. That would be rough.
It's a Christmas choir that will do a concert in Copenhagen, Odense, and Aarhus. They had us email and tell about our interest and experience and chose. I don't know if there will be a way you can watch, but I will definitely let you know if there is. There will be 16 missionaries I think.
Haha I might be easy to get a long with most of the time, but I am still sure my companions need a lot of tålmodighed. We do a few crazy things but I feel like we are a little more focused overall. It's a good balance.
I have a goal to finish 3 Nephi this week which will probably be really hard but I want to get it done. I want to start reading the new testament. It has been really good though and I have gotten more out of it than ever before.
As of now Aubrey and Cooper and I are pretty good together so I'll just make sure it stays. It probably helps that there are only 3 of us. Less kids less drama.
Thank you for emailing the USB. I will watch for it. Also whenever you send me a package can you put some deoderant in it. Old Spice figi. They have weird deoderant here but from what I've seen and heard, it is crap. I'm pretty sure it's the reason Europeans have bad BO. I'm going to try to send you a letter today or tommorrow. They are written but I haven't gotten the chance to send them yet. You have to go to a certain place and pay a bunch of money.
We've had some pretty rainy weather too. It's alright, but I hate driving in it. Send me pictures of your weather and of you guys. I can get pictures :)
Conference was so great! So many things to ponder and get better on. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
I loved conference as well. I have tons of thoughts that I didn't write in my email, but there were so many good ones. Which talk was your favorite?
I love you lots and lots. Your emails are just fine. Have a good week!
